To my best friend - Chitu

Wish I could hug my best friend today and hug her so tight to say everything will be alright.I pray to god to give her enough strength to face this incredible grief. I miss her so much and I am deeply saddened in my heart. I have no courage to comfort her but I am praying for her.
I met her about five years ago but in the last three years in the absence of another friend I become closer to her. I bonded with her like no other. In my heart I knew she was someone I care for deeply. Sometimes you can connect with someone in such special ways. I share my deepest secrets with her and trust her more than anyone. Today when she is in pain, I am almost trying not to think of her. Have you ever felt like avoiding someone as it is so painful to face them? In her thoughts I penned a few lines, although I really cant describe in words.

I can’t comprehend just how sad you must feel
This sorrowful time must still feel unreal
As I think of you today,
I wonder why God gave you this pain
And life seems such a trial and all in vain
Happiness comes at times to all but sadness comes unbidden
And sometimes tears must fall
I can feel the pain in your heart and the amount of troubles piled
In this extremely difficult time
I pray that your faith will create inner peace and God will give you the strength to smile again
Till then, you are in my thoughts and prayers, Until the dark times start to fade.

POM Benefits

So I was going through an article about the benefits of POM juice and was amazed reading the benefits. To start, a glass of pomegranate juice contains about 40% of the US Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C. It also hasVitamin A, E and folic acid in good quantities. This preliminary research suggests that pomegranate juice may be helpful in preventing heart disease, heart attacks and stroke. Some research has also evaluated the antioxidant nature of pomegranate juice and its usefulness in fighting certain forms of cancer. Pomegranate juice has been tentatively shown to reduce incidence of breast and skin cancer. It has also been tested and shown to slow the growth of prostate cancer in mice. Can you believe it?

So here is some copy paste information. Here are eleven benefits:

1.Fights Breast Cancer
Studies in Israel show that pomegranate juice destroys breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. It may also prevent breast cancer cells from forming.

2.Lung Cancer Prevention
Studies in mice show that pomegranate juice may inhibit the development of lung cancer.

3.Slows Prostate Cancer
It slowed the growth of prostate cancer in mice.

4.Keeps PSA Levels Stable
In a study of 50 men who had undergone treatment for prostate cancer, 8 ounces of pomegranate juice per day kept PSA levels stable, reducing the need for further treatment such as chemotherapy or hormone therapy.

5.Protects the Neonatal Brain
Studies show that maternal consumption of pomegranate juice may protect the neonatal brain from damage after injury.

6.Prevention of Osteoarthritis
Several studies indicate that pomegranate juice may prevent cartilage deterioration.

7.Protects the Arteries
It prevents plaque from building up in the arteries and may reverse previous plaque buildup.

8.Alzheimer's Disease Prevention
It may prevent and slow Alzheimer's disease. In one study, mice bred to develop Alzheimer's disease were given pomegranate juice. They accumulated significantly less amyloid plaque than control mice and they performed mental tasks better.

9.Lowers Cholesterol
It lowers LDL (bad cholesterol) and raises HDL (good cholesterol).

10.Lowers Blood Pressure
One study showed that drinking 1.7 ounces of pomegranate juice per day lowered systolic blood pressure by as much as 5 percent.

11.Dental Protection
Research suggests that drinking pomegranate juice may be a natural way to prevent dental plaque.

Hate: An emotion but so is Love !

Synonyms:Abhorrence, abomination, anathema, animosity, antipathy, aversion, black beast, bother, bugbear, bête noire, detestation, disgust, enmity, execration,  grievance, gripe, hatred, horror, hostility, ill will, irritant, loathing, malevolence, malignity,  nasty look, no love lost,To love less relatively, nuisance, objection.
Somehow sometimes we use the word hate more so often than love, like even in normal situations for example when we are having a bad day " ah  hate my life", " Hate my boss, I just hate everything about him". " Ah how can someone be so rude, hate that guy". " Really she pisses me off, hate her",  “I love the way you love, but I hate the way I'm supposed to love you back. I mean seriously why such a strong emotion.?  The opposite of love is not hate, or is it?. I am trying to understand the different variables of Hatred, is it really that it is a spur of excess emotion or does it have a deeper meaning?

If you really look at the synonyms of hate then do you conclude certain feelings can  lead to hatred? Is there actually a thin line between love and hate..or hate merely means Evil??Can indifference's in point of view  lead to hated? .We have been taught about love in so many ways that I feel we often do use the term hate for very wrong reasons.  Jealousy, criticisms, Pride does it all lead to hatred? If you will notice all the emotions are interwoven , so can we say  love can  lead to hatred as well...Yes?. So if Love is blind; hate is deaf?

Confused so am I.

So what does the Bible say about Hatred?  Forbidden.
Leviticus 19:17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
Colossians 3:8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.

I was surprised to find some meanings of Hate "  To love less, relatively" " To be very unwilling; followed by an infinitive" Why is it that everything is defined under this one term? I could still love someone less relatively and still be fond of them.

Hate by itself is the emotion and  dynamic term. It does not require an object to focus on. Hate, as a mode of guilt or of pride, generates destructive thoughts (but at a lesser intensity than paranoia). Antithetical thoughts, when directed to other people, represent pride ; when directed to oneself, represent guilt.  Criticisms, Jealousy, indifference arise from the  sense of idealism.

So what do some great minds think about hate?

All is fair in love and war~~Francais Edward Smedley
Love is much like a wild rose, beautiful and calm, but willing to draw blood in its defense~~Mark Overby
People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. ~~~ Nelson Mandela
The opposite of love is not hate; it's indifference.~~Elie Wiesel
Love is a given, hatred is acquired.~~Doug Horton

The story of stuff

So I stumbled upon this website about story of stuff. Guys  I am not kidding this is the most educative website about few ignored topics. They have this interesting 20-minute videos that  captivates a wide variety of topics . It is educative and also sad sometimes when we see how we exploit and in turn exploited everything we touch.

Annie Leonard, an activist who has spent the past 10 years traveling the globe fighting environmental threats, narrates the Story of Stuff, delivering a rapid-fire, often humorous and always engaging story about “all our stuff—where it comes from and where it goes when we throw it away.In 1992 she testified in front of the US congress on the topic of international waste trafficking. We all have so much to learn from this truly enterprising and inspiring women.

One of the video that captured my attention was the animation about recycled bottles. I wonder why do we still use bottled water?. Its the same as boiled water, I wonder why is it that people don't have the time to boil water but they wouldn't mind driving down to the nearest store for bottled water.According to the Wilderness Medical Society, water temperatures above 160° F (70° C) kill all pathogens within 30 minutes and above 185° F (85° C) within a few minutes. So in the time it takes for the water to reach the boiling point (212° F or 100° C) from 160° F (70° C), all pathogens will be killed, even at high altitude.

And importantly, the boiling of water requires no special apparatus, training, or difficult to find chemicals. The means to boil water for safe drinking are usually close at hand:
  • A source of heat
  • A vessel to hold the water.

So look at these videos and if you are inspired as I am ..stop having bottled water for you,  for us and for the entire mankind.Always wanted to do something for someone? Here is a start...

Satyameva Jayate " Truth alone triumphs"

I got my Indian passport reissued recently . I was totally excited to receive it (thanks to Jiju). Well wasn't too happy about my photograph but think about it, this always happens. When you want a nice picture on your driving license or passport or any other imp document, you have bad hair day or your picture is dark and the best one..even though you give your best shot somehow it turns out to be" ahh..not one of your great pics". Moving on, so I went through all the pages and as I glanced at our national and read the term "Satyameva Jayate", I suddenly had a sense of peace as if I never noticed these words before . Simple yet beautiful and strong words. I wanted to write a few things from Mun-da-ka Upanishad from where this motto was taken originally. This one people is truly inspiring and straight from Pandora !

The Mundaka Upanishad is one of a genre of Hindu scriptures written by Shankara. Shankara was an Indian philosopher who consolidated the doctrine of Hindu scripts. The Mundaka Upanishad's only objective is to teach the highest knowledge, which is imparted in the scripts. This Upanishad divides all knowledge into two categories. The knowledge that leads to Self Realization is called Para Vidya (Great or Divine Knowledge) and everything else is called Apara Vidya or Knowledge of Material world.

These are some of quotes that captured my attention from the Upanishad;
    * The heavens are His head; the sun and moon, His eyes; the quarters, His ears; the revealed Vedas, His    speech; the wind is His breath; the universe, His heart. From his feet is produced the earth. He is, indeed, the inner Self of all beings
    * From Him come all the oceans and the mountains; from Him flow rivers of every kind; from Him have come, as well, all plants and flavours, by which the inner self subsists surrounded by the elements.
    * The fetters of the heart are broken, all doubts are resolved and all works cease to bear fruit, when He is beheld who is both high and low.
    * The sun does not shine there, nor the moon and the stars, nor these lightnings, not to speak of this fire. When He shines, everything shines after Him; by His light everything is lighted.

The famous quote from Mundaka Upnaishad;
Satyameva jayate nānrtam
Satyena panthā vitato devayānah
Yenā kramantyrsayo hyāptakāmā
Yatra tat satyasya paramam nidhānam

In devanāgarī :
सत्यमेव जयते नानृतम् सत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः । येनाऽऽक्रमन्त्यृषयो ह्याप्तकामा यत्र तत् सत्यस्य परं निधानं ॥

Meaning:
Truth alone triumphs; not falsehood.
Through truth the divine path is spread out by which
The sages whose desires have been completely fulfilled,
Reach where that supreme treasure of Truth resides.

We are awarded with such wealth of knowledge through this simple quote!

“You have more time than you think you have, no matter how much you have to do”

On a cold winter day in NY I was waiting for my bus to get home from college. I saw a coffee shop just opposite to the bus stop and thought I would cross the road and sit inside the café. As I was about to cross the road, an old lady called out. “Excuse me can you help me" " Yes, how can I help" I replied instantly. She was old and had a note book in her hand. She passed it over to me and said" I am trying to learn math, can you teach me little bit". So I sat next to her on the bench right on the bus stop, she took out her glasses and opened the book for me. I saw some exercises on addition and subtraction. I told her a how to use her fingers to count which is I guess how I learnt. After a while I asked her to finish couple of them left in the sheet. Once she finished I told her “ very good, you did great “ . She was ecstatic and wondered how she got it all right. She asked if I could help her with the next chapter, I agreed and told her will help her till the bus shows up. In a matter of few minutes we saw a bus coming, she was immediately disappointed and I could not see her so sad so I assured her that I will take the next one. I taught her for some more time and then it started raining. As we parted, she said “when I woke up this morning, I was worried who will help me if I cant go to school but you took my worries away, thank you angel” I gave her a hug and thought to myself “You have more time than you think, no matter how much you think you have to do”. Take the time to help someone whenever you get a chance !

Amelia Earhart's Contract of Marriage- Orginal archive

Amelia Earhart is fascinated us over a period of time.. the lady, the mystery, her disappearance just everything about her. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo over the Atlantic Ocean.
I was amazed when I came across the marriage contract she signed before she tied a knot with George Putnam . If you read this letter you know how fearlessly independent she was, at that day and age. You realize how passionate she was about flying and a little cold about her marriage or even love. This letter again puts us back to question " what was going on in her mind when she wrote this letter"?

Amazing Cravens!

This weekend I visited the Luray Cravens in Shenandoah Valley. This place is surrounded by the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains, nature at its best. Shenandoah Valley contains a number of geologically and historically significant limestone caves, we visited Luray Cravens. This place was simply breathtaking.

I want to write about this amazing experience before I forget; although the beauty cannot be captured in words I will try to express my emotions. As we walked inside the cave, there was this peaceful silence and a cool breeze almost touching my face. I knew then this was going to be extraordinary. I am going to talk about my favorites which captured my attention .There is a formation which is referred as the dream lake. This is the largest body of water in the caverns; its deepest point is not more than 18 to 20 inches. Okay what really it is that, it reflects a myriad of fantastic forms and creates a mirror image of the abundant stalactites hanging from the ceiling in water below. Unless you are told that it is a reflection, you just can’t guess. I just stood there looking at nature at its best. I just wanted to stand there and photograph the moment in my memory. Fascinating!
As we moved on, I saw something called the Stalacpipe Organ, the world's largest musical instrument. Puzzled? So was I. Stalactites playing musical instruments! The caverns produce tones of symphonic quality when electronically tapped by rubber-tipped mallets. I was so astonished that I kept hearing the music over and over again whenever they played. This was unbelievable, no wonder it was featured on Ripley’s Believe it or not, Okay here is the footage..MUST SEE!!

If you get a chance do visit the valley, it is worth every minute of your time!
